Hello readers,

I keep on getting queries by Mails, Comments and Shout-box, where people ask me what course to choose for the particular rank that they have got. And most of them do ask what is their probability of getting seats in particular college.

Well this post I am writing for people to know what is more important while choosing a seat and I have been saying this in all my comment replies and mails.

When your are about to get into Engineering, what you really need to know is which college and course to be chosen.
If your ranks are very good say below 10,000 you can almost get into the top colleges in Karnataka. Otherwise you may have to compromise between the college or course and even city where you are going to study.

Choosing Colleges:
Some People say, what is there in College Name, Students can study any where if they will to, I agree 100% to this, they can study and get good marks too, But the problem with not getting into reputed colleges only hits during the Campus Recruitment. Choosing the college and the Course should be a wise decision.
Well but natural, more reputed the college, more chances of getting good and experienced Faculty, good facilities and infrastructure, good Placements too. And yes you would be with the best people in the environment.

Choosing Courses:
The best and on demand branches are Computer Science, Electronics & Communications, Mechanical, Civil(excluding Aeronautics and Architect). In almost any college you could find these courses.
So getting into these courses is easy with almost any ranks. But when your have ranks above 20,000 you may have to make a compromise on the college.

Mechanical or Civil:
Almost every 3 out of 5 colleges provide these courses, and people who join for these courses they have a mindset to go for these courses. These two courses are to be considered as evergreen and always in a demand. But while choosing these courses be sure enough to get information about the Lab, and other facilities provided by the Colleges.

CS vs EC:
if you have an option either CS or EC, choose wisely. Look, if you are good at differentiation and integration and you like deriving formulas and stuff, like the circuits and Maths.. GO for EC, and then the fact is to get placed in an IT Company.. at the end.. or rather take CS, Learn Logic apply it on Programming and see how you can make the dumb electronic device( computer) intelligent. Well no offence to any one who is from EC, and wants to join it.
If you don't have CS take Information Science(IS) Coz I did the same, Belive me there is no difference except some 2 or three subjects that too in higher semester differ.
Don't be disheartened if you din't get any seat in first round, or may be in reservation categories etc. Just push till the last round.

Beware:
Don't jump into any course to join a reputed College, unless you are very sure on it. Simply joining a course with no future is such a waste.
Most importantly listen to yourself than somebody else. Look what are your interests and what are your dreams. Don't simply follow someone or do Engineering only because some one is forcing.
Because in my engineering life I have seen people with ups and downs, where great scholar students have failed and not so great have done great job.

Karnataka Common Entrance Test (CET) exam is conducted each year for admission to various UG medical/dental/engineering/architecture courses in the colleges across Karnataka. Karnataka CET is conducted and regulated by Karnataka Examinations Authority(KEA).

Eligibility Criteria for KCET 2011:

For Engineering Courses:

CET Queries: Can I get a Seat in R.V College for the Second round

"Can u help me in telling that when the 2nd round counseling will be done. And can we get seats in R.V college after or in 2nd Counseling."

Answer :

The second rounds for CET Counseling starts only after the first ends. I hope you know that. But its unfortunate that no one can predict the exact dates for the commencement of 2nd round. The only best way is the CET(KEA) CELL itself.

Sahyadri College to be CET counselling centre

Sahyadri College off NH 48 at Adyar near here will be one of the centres for CET counselling this year. The Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) in the process of decentralizing counselling for admission to professional courses for the current year has decided to start counselling centres in Hubli, Gulbarga, Mangalore and Shimoga. This initiative will benefit students from places surrounding Mangalore.

A press release from Sahyadri College here on Wednesday stated Mangalore has the second highest number of candidates after Bangalore appearing for the CET. A counselling centre here will ease the pressure on counselling staff at the Bangalore centre besides saving the hassle of travel for the candidates and their parents to Bangalore. KEA officuals who visited the college campus, were impressed by the infrastructure.

The college campus is well connected with good public transport system, parking and other infrastructure required for such a centre. About 15,000 students from Dakshina Kannada, Chikmagalur, Udupi, Uttara Kannada districts are likely to benefit from this counselling centre for medical and engineering courses. The 10,000 sq feet area on the ground floor of Sahyadri College of Technology will be used as the counselling centre.

There will be separate space for inspection, registration, and reviewing sections. The proceeding will be projected on giant LCD screens and blue prints for installing server and networking is prepared in consultation with technical committee of KEA. This will enable networking with Bangalore and other centres. The KEA in collaboration with BSNL has availed a leased line and satellite connectivity.

The counselling centre will also have a banking counter and canteen facilities. There will be mock counselling done to test the accuracy and working of the system in March and the centre will be operational from the month of June to August, the release adds.

Toppers of CET 2010 in Medical, Engineering and ISM&H

They have come out in flying colours in CET 2010. City students topped in engineering and architecture streams while Mangalore student came first in medical and Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy (ISM&H). Interestingly, in the three streams — medical/dental, ISM&H and engineering — not a single girl has made it to the top 10.

Shanbhag Anil Atmanand, a student of VVS Sardar Patel PU College, stood first in engineering with a score of 97.22%. Soujanya K, a student of National Hill View Public School, Bangalore, bagged the top slot in architecture with a total score of 79.66%. St Aloysius PU College student Akshay B Pattabi came first in medical as well as ISMH.

In medicine, five students from Bangalore — two of them from MES, made it to the top 10. Engineering and architecture has seven and eight students from Bangalore respectively in the top 10.

Medical toppers prefer engineering

Surprisingly, the medical toppers whom The Times of India interviewed, said they did not wish to pursue a career in the same field. The top two rank holders are keen on pursuing engineering.

"I love maths. I have already got through Integrated MS at IISER Thiruvananthapuram. Taking the medical exam was just a last minute decision. I took Biology because it's a pure science. I have also appeared for IIT where they too offer MSc but I am not confident of my IIT results," said Akshay B Pattabi, topper in medicine.

Similar is the case with Sunil N, the second rank holder in medicine. "I was interested in medicine but later my interest switched towards engineering. I have secured fourth rank in engineering as well. I will take electronics and communication from RVCE. Later, I will pursue MBA from IIM-B," said Sunil.

CET seat matrix, fee may remain the same

The fee structure for professional courses and the seat-sharing formula between private colleges and the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) this year will be the same as 2009.

The KEA organised a meeting withprivate college managements on Monday to discussseat matrix and the fee structure to be adopted this year. “We have agreed to continue with last year’s fee structure and seat-sharing formula,” state medical education minister Ramachandra Gowda said after the meeting. “But, we will support the private managements, who areopposing a recent judgement by justice Gopal Gowda on free structure, in the Supreme Court.”

The seat matrix and fee structure for medical and dental courses have almost beenfinalised. Private colleges have agreed to continue with the previous year’s guidelines. Seat allotments for engineering courses will be finalised on Wednesday.

The higher education department has appointed a committee comprising the principal secretary of the department, and the executive director and administrative officer of KEA to decide on seat-sharing and fees. A sub-committee appointed by private colleges will also study the issues.

“The sub-committee will submit its proposal to the committee appointed by the government on Wednesday. Members of both the committees will then discuss their reports and take a decision,” higher education minister Aravind Limbavali said.

According to senior officials in the higher education department, the government would not demand any change in the fee structure and seat matrix followed in 2009. If the private managements do not raise any objections either, then last year’s guidelines will be followed, they said.

Private college managements had demanded that the government appoint a committee to fix the fee structure, but the government refused it citing lack of time. “We are running short of time and if we appoint a committee now, it will have to visit all the colleges across Karnataka to collect information,” said AS Srikanth, principal secretary, department of higher education.

“It has to submit the report to the government and then to the Supreme Court. That is a long process and we can do it for the next academic year,” he added.

No new engineering colleges in CET '10

There would be no increase in engineering seats in Common Entrance Test (CET) 2010. The higher education department has decided not to allow new engineering colleges registering after April 10, 2010, to participate in the counselling sessions.

In fact, this was one of the demands put forth by private professional college managements before the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), which accepted it at a meeting held recently.

After the meeting, the KEA informed the institutions about its decision.

MK Panduranga Shetty, president, RV Group of Institutions, told DNA: “It is not just a decision taken by the state government. Even the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has endorsed the same, stating that colleges that come into existence after April 2010 must be considered for next year’s counselling only.”

According to KEA officials, every year, at least five to six new engineering colleges come up in the state.

“Because of colleges coming into existence at the last moment, the entire counselling process gets affected. There would also be pressure from the managements to include new colleges in the CET,” AS Srikanth, principal secretary, department of higher education, said. “But, this time, even they requested us not to allow new colleges.”

“This year we have asked all colleges to provide their seat matrices before April,” a KEA official said, not wanting to be named. “If any new colleges get registered after that, we won’t consider them for this year’s seat allocation process.”

CET COMMENCES

The Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority for admission to professional courses will be held 28th and 29th April, throughout the State.
The test tomorrow begins with Biology paper from 10.30 am to 11.50 am and Mathematics from 2.30 pm to 3.50 pm. On Apr. 29, it would be Physics in the morning session and Chemistry in the afternoon. Each paper would be for 60 marks.
The city will have 12 centres including Sarada Vilas college, Marimallappa's college, Sadvidya Composite PU College, Maharani's PU College and JSS Women's College. Totally 6,688 students are expected to write the examination.
Prohibitory orders will be in force 200 metres around each centre with the photocopying shops in the vicinity ordered to close down during the exam hours, according to Dy. Director of PU Board K. Chandramma.

Karnataka medical and dental college seat sharing decided

The Karnataka government has entered into a seat-sharing understanding with the private and minority-run medical and dental colleges for the coming academic year.
The formula for seat-sharing is more or less the same as that of 2009-10. The medical and dental colleges under the private and minority managements expressed their inability in parting with more seats than that of last year owing to the steep increase in costs in running the institutions. The seat-sharing formula will be submitted to the Supreme Court for ratification as the court is hearing a petition on the fee structure of the medical and dental colleges. A similar approval for seat-sharing was obtained from the court last year.
Of a total of 4,069 medical seats in the government, private and minority-run medical colleges, the total seats in the government pool (to be filled through a common entrance test) will be 1,872, while the managements will have a quota of 2,033 seats. In all, 164 seats have been set aside for the All India quota for which entrance will be conducted by the Centre.

There are 10 government medical colleges, 10 private medical colleges and 10 minority-run medical colleges in the State. Following the fresh understanding on seat-sharing, the government will enjoy a benefit of 772 seats in the private and minority institutions (there are 1,100 seats in the government colleges) while the private medical colleges will have the benefit of admitting 1,315 students and the minority institutions 1,010 students for MBBS. For the BDS course, 35 per cent of the private college seats will go to the government while the minority-run institutions will give 25 per cent of the seats.

Karnataka to continue with CET, COMED-K exams

Karnataka will continue to hold CET and COMED-K exams separately as the private engineering colleges rejected the government's proposal to merge the exams at a meeting held here on Friday, Feb 19.

The government, however, has offered to allot seats to the private colleges that wish to set CET as their entrance test.

The seat sharing formula remains unchanged at 50:50 ratio between government and private college
managements. The seat-sharing ratio for minority institutions will be 45 per cent and the rest will go to private managements.

The fee structure for 2010 CET finalised during the meet is going to add to the woes of the students who fall under the General Merit category as fees for these candidates has been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per year.

However, the fees for the 'poor meritorious' category will remain the same as last year’s Rs 15,000 per year, informed Higher Education Minister Aravind Limbavali.

The following is an outline of the decisions finalised at the meeting:

Medical & Engineering Seat Sharing Matrix And Fees

The government's share of seats in the CET has been gradually decreasing over the years. It was 85:15 in 1994-95 but is now reduced to 40:60 (medical). Private college managements are expected to petition the education secretariat on not giving up any medical/dental seat to the government for next year's UG admissions. The govt in 2007 had increased the salaries
of teaching staff in government medical and dental colleges. Now, the private colleges too must hike the salaries
to retain staf. Each college will have to bear an additional burden of Rs 3 crore.

The government got an extra 5% seats in Engineering colleges in 2009, in turn 25% these seats will be reserved for the poor and meritorious students. Needless to say the government will have its own criteria of determing who is poor.

Fee Update for 2010-11 Admission

Private institutions are willing to allot 75% of the engineering seats to the Government if the govt is willing to hike the fees by 45%. The institutions argue when parents are willing to pay Rs 40,000 for nursery kids why are they hesitating to increase the fee for professional courses?

Private institutions want govt to scrap CET and use just PUC marks for admission. They want the govt to raise the bar for admissions as most of the students who graduate are below average.

Poor Meritorious Quota

At least 10,000 seats in undergraduate engineering courses in the state, will be earmarked for meritorious poor during 2009-10. The fee for these students will be Rs 15,000 against the regular Rs 25,000.

Annual family income of Rs 2 lakh is the ceiling, while the creamy layer has been completely kept out of the purview of the quota (creamy layer policy laid out in government order No SWD225BCA2000, dated March 30, 2002). The creamy layer covers SC and ST and also the Categor I of the backward classes. The creamy layer applies only to Categories II(A), II(B), III(A) and III(B). Students belonging to these categories but not failing under the creamy layer will also be elegible for the quota.

The government has decided to distribute 50% of seats under the government quota for the poor and meritorious students who have earned competitive ranks in CET.

The candidates will have to provide during the consuseling a certificate from the jurisdictional tahsildar certifying their annual family income.

There have been reports that the Karnataka government has been considering reserving around 10% of the seats that are admitted through the Common Entrance Test held by KEA to non-Karnataka students. A large number of private college managements are happy with the idea of a common CET and had agreed to the proposition. If the unified CET becomes a reality, around 60 per cent of seats will be with the government, 25 per cent with management, 5 per cent for the NRI quota and 10 per cent for non-Karnataka students.

No fee structure has yet been decided by the government for the proposed non-Karnataka category. Actually this news is just broke and much on authentication of this news would be known only when the CET Adission starts.But then Some of the Students may miss getting a Good Coaching for CET Papers.

Well what I say is do not wait only for CET, Prepare for other entrance exams too, And if CET Permits, give your best there. I don't see much diffculty in writing CET if you are well prepared.

CET Seat Matrix Fees

The government's share of seats in the CET has been gradually decreasing over the years. It was 85:15 in 1994-95 but is now reduced to 40:60 (medical). Private college managements are expected to petition the education secretariat on not giving up any medical/dental seat to the government for next year's UG admissions. The govt in 2007 had increased the salaries of teaching staff in government medical and dental colleges. Now, the private colleges too must hike the salaries to retain staf. Each college will have to bear an additional burden of Rs 3 crore.

The government got an extra 5% seats in Engineering colleges in 2009, in turn 25% these seats will be reserved for the poor and meritorious students. Needless to say the government will have its own criteria of determing who is poor.

Fee Update for 2010-11 Admission

Private institutions are willing to allot 75% of the engineering seats to the Government if the govt is willing to hike the fees by 45%. The institutions argue when parents are willing to pay Rs 40,000 for nursery kids why are they hesitating to increase the fee for professional courses?

Private institutions want govt to scrap CET and use just PUC marks for admission. They want the govt to raise the bar for admissions as most of the students who graduate are below average.

Poor Meritorious Quota

At least 10,000 seats in undergraduate engineering courses in the state, will be earmarked for meritorious poor during 2009-10. The fee for these students will be Rs 15,000 against the regular Rs 25,000.

Annual family income of Rs 2 lakh is the ceiling, while the creamy layer has been completely kept out of the purview of the quota (creamy layer policy laid out in government order No SWD225BCA2000, dated March 30, 2002). The creamy layer covers SC and ST and also the Categor I of the backward classes. The creamy layer applies only to Categories II(A), II(B), III(A) and III(B). Students belonging to these categories but not failing under the creamy layer will also be elegible for the quota.

The government has decided to distribute 50% of seats under the government quota for the poor and meritorious students who have earned competitive ranks in CET.

The candidates will have to provide during the consuseling a certificate from the jurisdictional tahsildar certifying their annual family income.

The Common Entrance Test (CET) 2010 will be held on April 28 and April 29, 2010. The examination will take place in 228 centres all over the State with counselling scheduled to take place in six centres - Bangalore, Hubli, Gulbarga, Mangalore, Shimoga and Davangere.

The Minister for Higher Education also reiterated the government’s interest in holding a common CET and issued an open invitation to the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges Karnataka (COMED-K) for discussions.

Govt. and private college discussions inconclusive

The Karnataka government and the management of private colleges in Karnataka had a discussion to evolve a Common Entrance Test and a common fee structure for professional colleges, but the discussions ended inconclusive. Last year there were two entrance examinations - the CET held by the government Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), and the Comed-K held by the private colleges. After the inconclusive talks, an announcement was made by the government to set up a committee to explore the pros and cons of a common entrance test and fee structure.
At the meeting, though there were some reservations about an unified entrance test, it wasn’t rejected outright. The Karnataka Private Dental Colleges Association urged the government to keep the needs and limitations of the private colleges in mind before deciding the fee structure and to ensure that the fees collected enables the colleges to meet the recurring expenditures, including infrastructure.

CET counselling in M'lore, Davangere from this year (2010)

Starting from next academic year, Mangalore and Davangere too will also see Common Entrance Test (CET) counselling for admissions into professional courses.
This decision was taken as the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) decided to go ahead with decentralisation of the CET, after counselling at Hubli and Gulbarga gave encouraging results last year.

Higher Education Minister Aravind Limbavali has given the formal approval for holding counselling at these two places and KEA will soon start working on setting up of these centres.

Henceforth, the counselling will be held at five centres including Bangalore, Hubli, Gulbarga, Davanagere and Mangalore.

KEA took the decision to decentralise the counselling for the benefit of the students who are not from Bangalore.

Single CET may split COMED-K

Bangalore: The state government's proposal to hold a single Common Entrance Test (CET) is now threatening to split the Consortium of Medical Dental and Engineering Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K), the representative body of the private professional institutions.

Most private engineering colleges have threatened the COMED-K that they would withdraw their membership, if the body rejects the government proposal for a single CET.
"We are ready for a single CET. We are running four technical institutions and we know the problems of rural colleges. It would be good if we have a single CET and the government conducts it," said Shekhar Swamiji, the head of BGS group of institutions and junior pontiff of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt.

"If the single CET does not happen, then we will think of coming out of the consortium. I will discuss this issue with my senior and take a decision soon," the swamiji added.

Of the 170-odd engineering colleges that are with the COMED-K, most are in rural areas and are finding it difficult to fill their seats every year. Less than 25 of these institutions are in Bangalore. "We don't know the condition of medical colleges, but it has become difficult for us to fill seats through the COMED-K test and we are ready for a single CET," said another official from one of the prestigious institutions on the condition of anonymity.

Dr MG Venkatesh Murthy, technical director, Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan said: "We are ready to accept a single CET. We are also ready to withdraw our COMED-K membership to facilitate the same."

These colleges gave vent to their ire over the state of affairs in the COMED-K at a meeting organised by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) here on Friday.
A representative from Vivekananda College of Engineering and Technology in Puttur of Dakshina Kannada district said, "Last year, out of the 105 seats in our college, only one seat could be filled through COMED-K. I don't think we are getting any benefit from the consortium and it is better to go in for a single CET."

According to sources in KEA, a few college managements have contacted the higher education minister and the principal secretary of higher education department and expressed their support for a single CET.

"After discussions with the managements, the minister said he will appoint a committee to look into the issue. On behalf of all the engineering colleges who are for a single CET, I request the minister to consider representatives from rural colleges instead of entertaining the city managements," stated the principal of a reputed engineering college on the condition of anonymity.

Each member-college pays nearly Rs 50,000 for COMED-K every year. Some college managements alleged that COMED-K is not giving much publicity to its entrance test to admit students to undergraduate courses. The engineering colleges which are extending their support to a single CET and are ready to come out of COMED-K want the government to amend the KEA Act and allow even students from outside Karnataka to take the test.

Exam Details of CET(KEA) Karnataka 2010

The CET consists of 4 papers, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The subject combination depends on the course you are applying for. The candidates who are applying for Medical/Dental/ Ayurveda/Unani/Homeopathy/Naturopathy &Yoga have to appear for Physics, Chemistry and Biology papers and candidates who are applying for Engineering/Technology/Architecture course have to appear for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics papers.
All papers are of 60 marks and 1 hour 20 minutes duration. The selection of the candidates depends on the marks obtained by them in this exam. The selected candidates are then called for counseling in which they are awarded their desired streams in their desired colleges.

Karnataka CET 2010

The medical/dental/engineering/architecture courses in the colleges and universities across Karnataka. Karnataka CET is conducted and regulated by Karnataka Examinations Authority(KEA). The admission through KCET is open only to the Karnataka residents; however there are some seats under management quota which are for the non Karnataka students.

Karnataka CET consists of examinations for four subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology & Mathematics. Candidates who want to get admission in Engineering courses appear for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics exams. Those who wantadmission in medical/dental courses appear for Physics, Chemistry and Biology exams. The candidates who want admission in B. Arch should have given NATA on whose basis admission to B.Arch is conducted.

Eligibility criteria:

For Medical/Dental Courses:

A candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology with atleast 50% aggregate marks in PCB(40% for SC/ST/OBC). Those who are appearing for class 12th exams in 2010 can also apply. Also a candidate should have attained the age of 17 years but not more than 25 years as on 31st December, 2010.

For Engineering Courses:

A candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with English, Physics, Mathematics and any of the Chemistry / Bio-Technology / Computer Science / Electronics / Biology with atleast 45% aggregate marks in optional subjects(40% for SC/ST/OBC). Those who are appearing for class 12th exams in 2010 can also apply.

For Architecture Course:

A candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with Mathematics with atleast 50% aggregate marks in all the subjects(45% for SC/ST/OBC). Those who are appearing for class 12th exams in 2010 can also apply. Candidates should have also appeared in NATA and got atleast 40% marks in it.

Availability of Application forms:

The forms for Karnataka CET will be available in schools and colleges of the Karnataka CET. For those residing outside Karnataka the form can be obtained by post from KEA by sending a Demand Draft along with the request for form.

Examination scheme:

There will be separate papers for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. Each paper will consist of 60 objective type questions and will be of 80 minutes duration.

Karnataka CET 2009 Seat Matrix solved without any issues

As the Govt. and The Management of Private colleges come into consciences, there would not be any complex issues for CET – 2009. Though the govt. didn’t bargain much, it didn't gained much also. It’s kind a relief for the students who are aspiring Engineering, Medical and other technical/Professional courses. The govt. was not in favor of continuing CET. They wanted to cancel it. But as of now for BDS/Ayurveda and Unani courses will be out of CET. May be govt. is into slowly eradicating the entrance exam.

Karnataka CET started in 1994 was one of the best admission systems in

India

till past few years. After the successful implementation of CET many states followed the same. But after the turmoil created by greedy commercial private institutions led by politicians the whole system was started to sink. Many students committed suicide. Even the Court ruling in favor of Private institutions killed the dreams and ambitions of thousand of middle class students.

Poor Meritorious Quota

At least 10,000 seats in undergraduate engineering courses in the state, will be earmarked for meritorious poor during 2009-10. The fee for these students will be Rs 15,000 against the regular Rs 25,000.

Annual family income of Rs 2 lakh is the ceiling, while the creamy layer has been completely kept out of the purview of the quota (creamy layer policy laid out in government order No SWD225BCA2000, dated March 30, 2002). The creamy layer covers SC and ST and also the Categor I of the backward classes. The creamy layer applies only to Categories II(A), II(B), III(A) and III(B). Students belonging to these categories but not failing under the creamy layer will also be elegible for the quota.

The government has decided to distribute 50% of seats under the government quota for the poor and meritorious students who have earned competitive ranks in CET.

The candidates will have to provide during the consuseling a certificate from the jurisdictional tahsildar certifying their annual family income.
